Red Planet movie, just another Mission To Mars or will it be better?

I saw a preview for this movie when I went to see *shiver* The Exorcist last night. I'm not sure what to think of it. It looks cool, but then again, so did Mission To Mars.

Thoughts?

Well, I just went and watched the trailer. It looks okay, but the Mission to Mars trailer looked better....and then the movie ended up being crap. Val Kilmer? ack

Red Planet is supposed to be pretty good.

I've heard it compared to Aliens on Mars, so it should be a pretty decent shoot 'em up.

How could it be worse than Mission to Mars? I though MTM had promise, but the second half of the movie stunk.

I may just have the scoop here....

I have a friend who was an animator for Digital Domain, the company that did the effects for the film. Of course, he was/is under NDA as far as letting anyone in on details, but I talked to him about it while he was working on it. (Side note--This guy did the dodge commercial where the truck is sitting in nothingness and the forest/wilderness scene grows up around it. VERY talented animator, and a GOOD contact for me out there in L.A.)
Anyway....I talked to him the night after he went to see Mission to Mars. He said that the CG in Red Planet was definitely going to be better, but not to expect any great story. Basically, he said it was pretty much as cheesy as Mission to Mars, but for sure it was worth checking out. He didn't sound like he thought it would be a big blockbuster or anything, but it should certainly do well.

So....better than MTM? Maybe. Better CG elements? Probably. Better story? Wouldn't count on it. In short: I guess we'll have to wait and see!. :)

I'll go to see it expecting the same thing as I did when I went to see MTM then :)
