RED nerds check in (Oct EPIC annoucement)

So, thoughts on the new toys? Scarlet is being announced in more detail Nov 30th, so I'm definitely looking forward to that. They have some pretty insane features now:

* Nikon/Canon/RED len electronic control (AUTOFOCUS WHOOHOO!!)
* iPhone-style touch-to-focus touchscreens (craziness!)
* ISO 8000 (320 is the new 800 baby!)

Lots of other goodies, but those are what caught my eye. That Bomb EVF looks pretty dang good too - pricey, but awesome - and I'll definitely be picking up a RedRocket card (both of which are already available, at least in limited quantities).

My heart's desire is to get an EPIC for shooting and a Scarlet for B-Roll and go-anywhere type of projects

it shall definitely be interesting. The camera is damn nice, especially on the higher end. But even w/ the Scarlet, you can do a 7D set up (in one of the video rigs) for relatively cheap. Though, I'm going to guess it will draw from different markets.

Also, does electronic control mean AF control, or just purely aperture control?

AF + Iris, at least that's what they've said so far...

Well, the Scarlet and the 7D are totally different animals. The 7D does 1080p, whereas the Scarlet does 3K. The 7D can only record for 12 minutes due to the 4GB limit on the CF cards, whereas the Scarlet can keep going for as much storage as you can afford (with the stacking method for storage they previewed, at least). The Scarlet has a ton of FPS options, lots of video options, whereas the 7D has 24/30fps @ 1080p and 60fps @ 720p. etc etc etc

The 7D is extremely nice for the price. I'm definitely planning on picking one up this year or early next year. It's really fabulous for 35mm-style video shots. I might have to go with the 5D if it proves to be a contender with the 24fps they're releasing next year. But if the Scarlet is due anytime soon, forget it

The 7D and other VDSLR do line skipping to 'achieve' 24fps. Your not getting a 'true' full 720p or 1080p at 24fps where every line is recorded. BUT how important is this to you? It depend on your output media. Will you be showing it on a fatty cinema screen or even a 50" 1080p screen? If your watching it on youtube it won't matter much

BUT it does look pretty dam f0cking nice though for the price. Different needs, different products and budgets. My TCM10 is great for my needs and the 1080p looks great on the lcd, youtube and pretty sweet on the 50" plasma. Not stunning but looks pretty dam sweet for what it is.

Scarlet will be $4-5k for a 'minimalist' setup.

The BOMB EVF look SICK and it ought to be at $3.2k! THATS nearly enough for 2x 7D!!!!

It'll be cool to see what the 30th November annoucement has for scarlet
