Hello,

I'm a linux newb and I'd like to get into some of this action but I was wondering whether I should invest my time in Red Hat or Mandrake Linux.

I'd like to host my own website and puff up my resume a bit too while gaining experience toward some sort of professional use.

Thanks!

i've used red hat for a long time and just tried mandrake. the mandrake install is a lot easier than red hat but there is quite a bit more information on red hat.

If you are looking for Resume Fluff then RedHat is your way to go. If you are looking for general linux experience past the installer AND want a friendlier desktop environment, then Mandrake is the way to go. As for server experience, both will do equally well as the server software is configured the same on the back end.

I've tried both Mandrake 9 and RedHat 8 briefly and I found that RedHat was much easier for me to pick up and learn quickly. We'll be deploying some linux machines (mostly Windows and a few Sun machines now)at my workplace soon and we're using RedHat. I just found it easier to use. I like the interface on RedHat much better.

Of those two, I'd go RedHat, if nothing else only cause Mandrake is in some serious financial trouble, who knows what will happen?
RedHat on the other hand is a financially healthy company.

But really, I'd go for Debian, the learning curve will be quite a bit steeper as it doesn't do any hand holding, but once you learn(and there are plenty of docs to learn from), it's far supperior to RedHat or Mandrake IMO.
