red hat 7.2

I've been experimenting with red hat's latest release and I have to say... this is perhaps the first time I have found a linux desktop environment to be more stable than windows 2000.

It also looks better....this distro has kde 2.2-10 for those wondering.

At this rate the desktop operating scene is going to look entirely different in 3-5 years.

I wonder if perhaps it would be in a company like red hat's best interest if they were to release a more dumbed down version to attract a broader audience? What would the fallout be? It seems as the distributions progress things do become easier to cope with... while some may dislike this, I'm all for it. It's unusual how the same group pursuing technological advancement so willingly will reject attempts to make things more user friendly. Perhaps this is because Microsoft has set the prescendents of the past and they aren't always attractive..

I don't know what the answer is... I do think that if we see companies like red hat begin to expand and attract different audiences then the increased revenue accumulated by supporting their products will allow them to put more into R&D and fine tune/grow even further. Just because we're dealing with open source doesn't mean there is no room for capitalism.

Anyway, I'm thoroughly impressed.

if you use gnome you can install ximian which allows an ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS type thing. that makes it really easy to use. im very impressed with ximian.

It's actually quite predictable. Being able to operate arcane computer systems has long been their role in society. Making things easier, means that admins and whatnot are not needed as much, and that threatens their security.

I think it's more the fact that they (or we) know how to use it as is, why work on dumbing things down when I can spend my time on things I find more interesting. Most Linux developers aren't trying to make a buck, they work on what they find fun.
