It is deserving of the high metascore it is getting. I never kept up with this game or was much interested but after seeing the scores it was getting and reading a bit about it, I picked it up.

Only played single player so far but it is so much fun. I hear MP is really good. Gonna maybe try that tonight.

Anyone else playing it?

Yes!

This game wasnt suppose to be this good. It's basically GTA on Mars. Though it's Volition who makes the Saint's Row series, I don't want to reffer to it as SR on Mars because there is no wackiness.

Seriously, the game is really good. Everyone who likes open world games should be playing this because it has a lot to offer, and the destructable buildings are a nice, fresh gameplay mechanic.

Seems to me Mercenaries on Mars would be more appropriate, since you can blow shit up.

I will definitely get this game but I think I may wait until it's cheaper.

But Mercenaries 2 wasnt fun and SR/GTA are. 😛

I hear what you're saying and yes it's a more appropriate comparison you're using--still you get the jist of what I'm saying.

I disagree completely on that one. Mercenaries 2 was certainly buggy, but it was a blast.... especially in co-op. Let's just say I probably played each mission 2-3 times in my own game and while helping out friends with theirs while OTOH I ditched GTAIV half way through and never went back. Boring POS 😛 Different strokes I suppose.

But, yes, I'm loving Red Faction and it is very much like Mercenaries... but minus the bugs  and minus the co-op

I've played a bit of co-op with Thraxen, and concur that it is a fun game if you can get over some of the minor annoyances..

I enjoyed the demo, and was thinking about picking it up. I have some other games I need to beat first, but I'll probably pick this one up when it's cheaper.

Glad to see others find it as fun as I do even though the only thing it seems to share in common with previous RF games seems to be the name and locale. I was hooked by the demo months ago, and the destruction side missions sealed the deal. Finding ways to beat the pro times is just great fun. When cornered by the aggressive AI and low on ammo, no problem; make a door with your hammer 😀 If we could call in carpet bombs it'd be Mercenaries 3.

I liked the demo though it's a HUGE (emphasize huge) departure from the original Red Faction which I played and loved on the PS2.

It is yes. I thought the lack of deformable terrain would bother me, but it hasnt!

Bumping this back up since there was some talk about the game in the Prototype thread.

I finished the single player this weekend and thoroughly enoyed the game. It's a bit short on content since you can basically more than half the guerilla actions and finish the game plus many of the missions are repetitive, but it was a lot of fun regardless.

** possible spoilers **

I died a few times on that last mission. I kept trying to destroy everything, but that wasn't working because there appeared to be infinitely spawning enemies (e.g. they kept coming from behind). I finally realized you have to just go all out and not stop at all. I was even able to take the tank all the way to the top and complete the final objectives with it.

This was a great rental, but I am glad I didn't buy it. Last night I finished the game, after a lot of side missions, and I found I am done with it. I have little interest in most games MP, so that wasn't a consideration.

I hoped enabling all the cheats and rampaging would add some play time, but the world is so desolate, you can't get that chaotic, all hell is breaking lose feeling, a game like CrackDown provides. I grew bored with that fast. 1 good, long, grinding, play through, was quite enough. CO-OP might have made another play through worthwhile I guess.

The final objectives? You got it past the barricade? How lol? I could never fit it past those 3 rocks near the top of the hill, had to get out and walk from there. I died a lot on that mission until i realised the tank would do more damage to itsself when shooting nearby enemies than the enemies could do so i had to ignore things that got too close.

I forgot to mention that... I had to do the same thing. I kept blasting vehicles off the front of my tank, but that was doing too much damage to myself. So if a vehicle got through my barrage I just rammed them out of the way.

As for getting to the top... on the left side there is a small wall with some tanks behind it just before you get to the rocks. I went over that wall and around the rocks. Then I was able to just plow through the camp and up the path to the top.

Last night I almost threw my controller across the room because of this game. In fact I would have done it if my wife hadn?t been there.

This might be a bit of a spoiler for the sensitive type.

So I was making my way through the final stages of the game last night and hit the final level where you drive a massive tank up the side of a mountain. It was chock full of massive explosions, overwhelming odds, white-knuckled excitement and...extreme frustration! Why the frustration you ask?

Well for the final level Volition decided to create a protracted and tricky road up the side of a mountain that eventually leads to the final boss. It?s filled with the meanest the EDF forces have to offer?but there isn?t a single checkpoint! That?s right--if you die you must start completely over at the very beginning of the level. I'm not exaggerating at all when I say it took me 3.5 hours to beat this one level. In fact my very LAST effort of the evening is when I finally beat it.

Certainly Volition isn?t the first developer to do this in the last level of their game, but playing it did stir up old feelings on the issue. I find it absolutely maddening when a developer does this in an effort to increase ?game play time? or difficulty.

If you want to provide a more challenging experience then throw more bad guys at me, increase their toughness, pose ammo limitations, use a different vehicle, or even take away the protagonists legs (kidding)--but don?t take away checkpoints in a long and difficult level like this. I?m not the gamer I use to be when I was 13 having 80 hours a week to dedicate to gaming. I might be completely alone here?and I?m betting I?m not?but there is nothing amusing about playing the same frustrating level over and over and over and over and over and over again because of poor design choices.

Get this--roughly 2.5 hours into replaying the level I had finally made it all the way to the top of the mountain receiving the "Mission Accomplished!? Pausing the game I then cheered mightily--SUCCESS! I called my wife into the room to prove to her games will, in fact, one day bring the world closer and possibly cure cancer! I hugged my cat assuring her everything was one again right with the world and that she would one day end up in a painting above the fire mantel! Unpausing the game I found myself standing in front of the final boss?s tank and was instantly killed by two attacking jets from behind. I wasn?t too worried though--I had reached my checkpoint right? Mission accomplished? No?

No.

The game then started me waaaay back at the beginning of the level again. Man I've not reached a level of frustration since one of the final races in Burnout Paradise where my cars exploded because I was 1 inch way from another car.

This game does a decent job of saving the game often enough while placing you in the right spots if you die during a mission, but drastically changing that very system just for the last level is infuriating and honestly feels a bit cheap! It completely goes against what the game taught the player what he/she should expect since the beginning. Heck I?m surprised Volition didn?t take away all our guns too.

Look, overall I do really love this game for everything it has to offer in both the single and multiplayer experiences?but that design choices with the last level left a bad taste in my mouth unfortunately.

I didn't get the tank but maybe half way up the hill, and it was done for. I juked right and used the arc welder a lot. There were ammo boxes on the way for reloads. The hammer and jet pack get you to the top going that way, while avoiding a ton of hurt. I used the arc welder to kill the boss in the tank too.

Haha... that happened to me too! The first time I made it to the top of the hill (after a fair number of failed attempts) I killed the tank with some rockets, but was then pecked to death by those damned airships (one of which has a gauss rifle) before I could blow open the cap on the gun. I was literally shocked when it put me all the way back at the beginning of the level.

But as I stated above, I now have what I feel is a near perfect strategy. First, DO NOT STOP. Second, do not worry about anything behind you (they spawn infinitely anyway). Third, do not shoot anything at point blank range... if they get that close just ram them. Fourth, as you go up try to shoot those guard towers. They usually have a soldier with a gauss rifle and since they are tall they can peck at you for a long time at long range.

When I put all that together I was able to make it to the huge roadblock at the end of the main road with roughly 1/3 of my tank's life left. This allowed me to then go around the rocks on the left side and take the tank all the way to the top. Then I just blew the crap out of the general's tank and the cover on the gun. Felt so satisfying after struggling with the last section.

6-7 I think. I tried what Thraxen posted, but after probably 5 tries, I was thinking "How the hell did he get it all the way up the hill?!?" I just couldn't do it, so I abandoned the tank when it was about to explode and tried to bee-line to the mission icon. A bunch of ground troops were in the way, and they killed me.

So, before doing the mission again I quick jumped to a safe house and equipped the arc welder, along with the rocket launcher and nano forge. The next play through I beat it.

Hmmm... how far did you get trying what I said? I found it to be a fairly consistent method. I can't get the tank all the way to the top each time, but at a minimum I can get it to the final huge road block just before those rocks. At that point, if your tank is about to blow, you can jump out and use a combination of sprinting and cover to run up the far right side. Going up the right side allows you to avoid most of the EDF. Once you get to the very back you can then cross over to the left side where all the Marauders are fighting and help them finish off the EDF before going up the hill.

Maybe it has to do with the path? I was hugging the right side the whole way up the mountain. The path is longer, but it seemed to be less hectic.

The bold part is what worked for me, brudda. I just had to abandon the tank a bit earlier is all. I didn't bother helping at all, I just went straight to the objectives.

Anyone playing this on multiplayer? Im new to xbox live but i am still good enough to occasionally get the top score in a game, highest kills etc. But i fail at shooting, i always run around and sneak up on people with the hammer, which works wonders but when it comes to using the assault rifle i fail, large open maps im never good at because of this reason, hammer charging on these maps ends up in death.

How do i kill people with the assault rifle? What are the other players doing that im not, tapping the trigger instead of holding down, are they using precise aim?? Enlighten me please 🙂
