A bit too complicated for me, but kudos for RED offering a truly professional grade cinema solution for $3k.

Kudos indeed but that $3k isn't going to mean jack sh!t as you can't do anything with it in reality. You will need the rest of the kit to make it work and is upwards of $1-2k minimum. But the quality should be stunning.
It's for a different market.

Yeah from what I've read, your basic "starter" kit is going to run about $4K. But still...sheesh. I think this is going to give a lot more creative control to artists to express their vision, especially indies and home users. Instead of having to fight the equipment, it's now as simple as learning how to use a point-and-shoot digital camera (relatively speaking). One man can make his own movie now - film, drag and drop to your computer, edit, output. There is a HUGE amount of indie support too, both from big companies and little startups. I have a $200 Zoom H2 mic that sounds as good as anything you'd hear on TV or in movies. You can buy jibs, fluid-head tripods, and skater, swivel, and slider dollies for hundreds of dollars or for just a few thousand.
Not to mention how this will affect productions with actors and such - no more worrying about tape and digital conversions or complex editing systems (because it's all digital), cost of renting (because you can purchase), and so on. $1200 gets you Final Cut Studio 2, which is more than enough to go to town on for indie stuff. Oh man...I'm just so dang excited about this lol
