Red Alert 3: "Yellow Borders" around units?

I watched some of these Red Alert 3 videos online and I've gotta say... I've played Red Alert since its conception way back 10-11 years ago... and today it just looks like something taken right out of a comic book... those thick bright yellow lines that outline everything that is selected makes the game (in my opinion) look horrendous and really ruins the experience..

Anyone know if there is an option to have it turned off?

Sorry I got distracted by looking at J. Mcarthy.

Oh yellow boxes. They don't look like anything that could ruin the game. Other than the Jets bounding boxes, I really don't see anything more but kick ass action. If there's not an option than I'm sure it's a simple mod.

METAL BOXES?!?! <Dawn of War'ism>

I'm not excited for Red Alert 3 but it does look good. I took the time to check out the new units on the website and the animations are quite slick and fluid, generally looks good.

Meh, I still need to finish Mass Effect before I can think about buying another game.

Been over 10 days since I last had time to play :(

There has to be some way to indicate that you have a unit(s) selected, and the highlighted outline seems as good as any. Some games show you the health of the unit below it, but that's not so great since any decent rts should have an option to have this for all units at all times anyway. I think RA3 will be good for mainstream gamers, but for people who spend a lot of time gaming with rts games I think you'd still be better off with starcraft, total annihilation, or supreme commander/FA. That's how it looks to me. The singleplayer campaign will probably be fun at least just for the cinematics.

I liked all of the RA's up to RA2 and once the new C&C3 Tiberium Wars came out I basically gave up the series, unless RA3 is radically different (which I doubt). The difference between the Westwood and EA games is that the EA games pride themselves on a zoomed in camera, extremely fast unit speeds, and whoever can macro the most will always win. The older RA's had a backed out camera, and a slowed default' game speed.. I don't know what happened between 11 years ago and today. The trend seems to be going towards those reflex driven CS/UT/TF/Quake people. World in Conflict took the same approach and I guess their formula worked out pretty darn well... (not in my opinion but I guess the majorities).

I'm an old school gamer, and kinda wish the "Red Alert" name actually meant it was played like a "Red Alert" and not some crazy fast paced RTS with the old Red Alert music slapped in there. The unit borders (again, only my opinion) only make it worse and more kiddish.

It does look quite annoying, I agree on that, I do hope that there's going to be an option to turn that off. And I've also recently noticed that the cardboard box-made buildings are back, they take around five seconds to destroy with a minimum amount of concentrated fire, which in my opinion is also very annoying. I miss my durable structures from Age of Empires, Galactic Battlegrounds and Rise of Nations, it made the skirmishes last more than ten minutes.

yeah i took note of that when i played, it kinda got annoying after a while but the Red Alert series was never intended for cinematic purposes.

I can only hope once the younger population that make up the majority of gamers today will eventually get the hint.. because these days it seems almost impossible to make any money off of things like what was previously said regarding stronger buildings, longer firefights, battles where tactics surpass macros..

All I've got to say is it seems like the yellow borders take away the potential quality of the game.

What are you talking about? ME is a great game! I beat the whole thing to the end.
And I'm jealous of that dude.. I wonder what is it that he is so damn busy with?! I wish I was that busy... But it's impossible to find an entry level IT job these days. :(

PS: Oh, and yes, those yellow borders are very ugly. I hate that. When I played the beta I thought it's some kind of a "testing" feature that will be taken out. Looks like it's there to stay. TBH, RA3 feels like a step BACK from C&C3 - not a step forward. Sure, there are many new interesting units and features, but overall, it just feels somewhat mediocre. The water is awesome though. ;)

Yeah the whole c&c name is worthless nowadays, its gone down the toilet :( Ah well, i can still have fun with CoH, starcraft and later starcraft 2 :D

And we still have Tiberian Dawn, Sun and Firestorm, as well as Red Alert and the various expansions for it, yes the graphics aren't up to today's standards, but they are fun, I have them installed and I still play them all from time to time, to this day Firestorm is still my favorite C&C game out of them all including the Red Alert series.

My old C&Cs worn out, just got "The first decade" myself.

I hadn't played Starcraft, but wasn't that a game based strictly off of speed and macros too? (I could be way off, I haven't played it but have seen some footage)... I just never stepped into the starcraft realm.

Something that has grown increasingly annoying is the fact that everyone attacks your Tiberium collectors. I know it's an effective strategy but to me, it really ruins these types of games. The focus becomes more, how do I protect my collectors instead of making a sweet base or large fleet of guys to attack with...maybe it's just me.

What I find more annoying is that newer games have these "resource points", where you have to do absolutely nothing to get money... even that, units don't cost anything.... they simply use points that once they die, the points are refunded... its the most retarded thing I've ever seen.

I would like to know what game refunds your resources once a unit is destroyed.

I know that your points in any unit cap would be restored in capped unit games but Ive never heard of resources being refunded in any of the 4 DoW games or CoH which are all "resource points" games

Resource points are just a fun new twist to Harvesters. It does what it was meant to do, forces people to expand outside of their base quickly to grab additional points, to obtain more resources, to climb up the tech tree and to unleash merry hell on anyone who thinks its fun to attack you.

I agree, the yellow distracts from the actual object selected. Red Alert 3 looks rather cartoon-y to me. I haven't really been playing PC games in the last few years, but I used to be a huge C&C fan, ever since the first one. The music really completed that game for me. I would play for hours. Red Alert was a refreshing angle to it, and, although it didn't seem as "serious" as the first one, it was fun. RA2 was too wild for me. RA3 looks the same. I, like the other posters, want the slower, tougher angle of the first one.

I used to competitively play Tiberian Sun; they had a great clan interface that made matches very fun. Ahh the good old days.

Even though the units look a bit cartoony, I'm sure I'll love the game. I loved RA 1 and 2 at least...

What is up with everyone going WoW-style cartoony though?

I too liked the slower, tougher angle of the original games.

The graphical style is different, but I don't know where you got the idea that RA and RA2 had slow gameplay. The former almost completely revolved around tank rushing effectively and the latter also encouraged it, since everything had fairly weak armor. The series has always been fast paced, more so than the C&C games.
