My laptop:

Dell Vostro 1700
Core 2 duo 2.0ghz T7300
2GB ram
8600m GT 256mb DDR2 - 169.09 drivers with modded INF from laptops2go
Santa rosa platform
160GB 5400rpm hdd
Using vista ultimate x64 with TFD (The first decade) version of RA2

It lags horribly whenever a building blows up and debris goes flying, i usually move the screen into the fog of war or just out of sight of the building so it speeds up again. Why is it like this?? Ive asked at notebookreview.com and got an array of answers:

1. Its the game, it just lags on new hardware
2. Its the CPU, RA2 is all software rendered
3. Drivers are bad

I have no idea if any of those are true, all i know is that RA2 ran perfectly on my opteron 170 2.0ghz (slower than my C2D!) with a 7900GTO. Im left to believe its GPU related because the laptop cpu is better than the desktop one and it lags. Also i used to use a range of the 163 drivers, same problem, used the 165's too, same problem.

For the record it only lags when a structure or unit (much worse with structures) is destroyed, dosent sound like a big deal but RA2 is all about destroying structures etc so it quickly makes the game pretty unplayable. I think its to do with the 8xxx series card. But i have no idea what a solution could be.

Heres what ive tried so far that hasent worked.

1. Setting afinity to cpu 0
2. Changing all the settings in the nvidia control panel for ra2 (game.exe) to off and then on
3. Various drivers (due to TDR errors with other games mainly) but none had any affect on RA2
4. Messing with the limited resolution and graphics settings in RA2, none had any effect on the lag at all.
5. Compatability modes windows xp SP2 and windows 98/me
6. Disabling visual themes and everything else that can be disabled in that window, didnt try 256 colors though.

Its sort of 2d, i dont know what to call it. Fake 3d? 2.5d? Its not entirely flat like starcraft but its not really 3d. Either way it shouldnt lag.

No crap, I play it on this thing, an E1505 with a T2300 and GMA 950 at 1280x800, and it has never ever even hiccuped. I'm betting you're running Vista, have you looked into RA2's compatibility? I know there are a few things you're supposed to do, and they may be different if you have the original CDs or are playing it off TFD.

Yeah i am, forgot to include that in the OP. Vista x64 and it is TFD pack. Ill go mess with the compatability settings see if theres any joy.

Awesome game. I think it's 2.5d with everything as isomorphic drawings.

I had serious issues running RA2 / Yuri on 3 different Dual Core systems (AMD/INTEL)... Disable the 2nd core in the hardware manager and the game seems to run fine.

I changed the affinity so it would only run on cpu 0, no go, still lagged. Tried that in combination with the various compatability modes, no joy, disabled visual themes and everything else, game still lags badly when a structure is destroyed.
