Recycling fee for new tvs?

I went to sams club the other day and saw a sign stating they would not start charging a recycling fee with all new tv purchases.

I was in a hurry so im not sure if this is on all electronics, just at sams. Has anyone else heard of this?

Maybe you just live in some crappy state where they piss and moan about the environment?

maybe not a fee, but more like a deposit... You buy a new tv, and put a $50 that you'll recycle your old one. Bring it in, and you get your 50 bucks back

And what if you want to keep your old TV too? The state gets to make $50 for you wanting a TV?

If you want to get rid of your old TV, you are not supposed to just dump it in the trash. You are meant to take it to a 'recycling center'. This usually means taking it to a TV shop.

Recycling the toxic wastes in a TV, particularly older models, is expensive, costing about $50 per unit. If you want to dispose of an old TV, you would be asked to pay a 'recycling fee' usually $10-20 to shop, so that they can dispose of it for you.

Many stores will pay this fee on your behalf, as a discount, if you buy a new TV from them.
