Just got this memo from where i work.

[start]
We want to bring to your attention a convenient way for your old computer equipment to be properly recycled. Staples, which operates more than 1,400 "superstores" for office supplies, has announced that they will accept computer equipment for reuse and recycling at its stores nationwide this Sunday, February 17 and Monday, February 18 (Presidents' Day). Individuals and businesses can bring in their old computer equipment, including monitors and hard drives. There is no charge for this service. Through a partnership with Gifts in Kind International, computers will be refurbished and given to children's organizations in communities across the country. Staples indicates that computers that are unable to be rebuilt "will be recycled responsibly to generate reusable materials."

To find the locations of Staples stores, see their website at: http://www.staples.com

People who bring in old computer equipment to Staples during this event can receive a $100 savings on a new computer with an Intel Pentium 4 processor, or $20 off a purchase of $100 or more for other Staples products purchased during those two days.
[end]

i don't know what they "exactly" mean by old computer equiment though...I hope you guys don't start bringing in a used floppy disk just so u can get 20off100;) sorry i don't have any more information. this is all i got.

sorry if this is not technically a hot deal.

[edit - thanks samgoody69]

I have an old Gateway 486 tower. This thing has got to be three feet high and probably weighs close to 30 pounds. It's so heavy, I bet Staples could get their $20 back if they sold it for scrap metal ;-)

I'll have to dig it out from it's resting place in the cellar and dust it off.

Remember it is illegal to throw away monitors and motherboards in the trash and you generally have to pay to recycle. What a great opportunity to go through you whole house and get rid of everything you don't want/can't use anymore. The gift certificate isn't worth getting as they send me coupons for more off all the time, but getting rid of old stuff free while giving to underpriveledged kids is great....maybe even a tax writeoff. There's the real deal.

I've never heard that it was illegal to throw them away in the trash (but i've also never thrown away a computer). Why is it illegal to do so?

Quote from website:

<< must be met with purchases to which no other coupon or instant savings offer applies >>

Since we can all find those $25 off $100, this is meaningless.

But it is a good way to recycle old stuff to save space (for those of us who live in apartment).

Regarding to why it is illegal to throw them away, they have toxic material and heavy metal in there so they need to be taken carefully.

There was a law passed about discarding any motherboards, cards, chips, etc. I don't remember all the details. Cases are fine but due to lead or something in the boards, your not supposed to toss em. Monitors can't be discarded in garbage due to the electrical charge they can hold for years. Your supposed to pay to get the charge drained and then they can be discarded, after being certified.

I don't know the exact specifics on the legalities of putting computers in the garbage, but I do know there are certains things you cant throw away. One of them is monitors. There are very, very bad materials in the monitors that are hazardous to the environment. In certain states/counties, it's actually against the law to throw away anything that's recyclable, but I doubt you're going to see policemen picking through your garbage trying to give you a ticket :)

You can do a search on the internet, and I think epa.gov may have something in relevance to the recycling laws. Most of the time it's just a big hassle to properly dispose of computer equipment, so people just throw it away.

I find it amazing how many garbage hobbyists and fanataics there are out there. All my garbage is garbage, but if you treasure my old video cards and other PC junk, come and get it, when discarded. :) My taxes pay for garbage removal.

Actully around here, if you put something in the trash for pickup that is not allowed or considered hazardous by local law, they tag it with a pink label and then a couple of hours later the hazardous material truck comes by and picked up the tagged itemsl. They add a "disposal fee" on your monthly bill for their effort. $50 for each monitor or TV, $125 for freezers/refridgeratore or orther items than contain freon, $10 for paint and paint related items, $15 for used oil, and there is a list of about 20 other items.

<< Finally a way to get rid of these PS2/Model 77s. >>

Gee.. What's wrong with the old PS 2's ?
I still have a model 70 sitting here ( one of my first puters ) that I fire up once in a while, just for laughs.

It's a Screamer, been upgraded to all the latest and greatest ( at the time ).
16 meg mem., 80meg HD, 486 Cyrix od ( @ a wopping 20mhz.), with a Math co-processor, 2 Floppies, AND a 4 meg video card.
and I have some spare microchannel cards to go with it!
Man, when I think of all the money I had to put into this thing back then, I just can't part with it, till I'm ready.
WHICH , I guess is the next time I go up the gun range, and remember to take it, and a Shotgun along.;)

I always shake my head when I see people post, without explanation or disclaimer, "you're not allowed ..." or "It's illegal to ..."

One should remember that, especially in this scenario (re: what is illegal to throw out with your trash and what isn't) these items are determined by local or state law, and not by federal law, so let's refrain from these generic "It's illegal to throw out ..." posts, because while it may be illegal for you, in your locale, it may not be illegal for someone else.

Wow, great post.
I just threw away 3 boxes of old parts yesterday! I tried talking to local officals and the trash company and no one could help me. I was telling them it was full of bad stuff, but they said just put it in the trash. Maybe some lucky trash man will be getting 20 off 100.
I wonder what Staples would do if I showed up with three huge boxes of old boards?

This would be a hotter deal if Staples would allow you to use an in-store coupon with the 20 off 100. Anyone got any idea whether this is possible? I have an old, as I call it, "Frankenstein's Computer" that used to house a 33Mhz 486SX with a 5 1/4", 8X CD, and 28MB of Fast Page DRAM...the only RECENT part in it is the Intel Overdrive processor which increased the speed to 83Mhz...and actually allows the thing to run (gasp) Windows 95!

I had thought about turning it into a purely Linux/DOS box...but might rethink it.
