Recurring theme with online camera shops

Triumph

I've heard of online camera shops pulling this BS before, they call you after you place the order and try to sell you all this high priced accessories like batteries, lenses, chargers, etc. Here's the ordeal my friend went through from PriceRitePhoto.com (copy & pasted from AIM)

friend: the website i ordered the camera from called today to do a voice confirmation
friend: i called them back and after about 20 minutes of being put on hold and given various runarounds, i get the flamboyant salesman who left the message
friend: he goes on this 5+ minute speech (in a horribly gay lisp) about how I must purchase the extra packages to truly use the camera

Triumph: uh oh
Triumph: i think i've heard about this scam
Triumph: they won't ship the camera to you unless you buy all the extra crap
friend: he tried to tell me that the camera comes with no battery, only a 15 minute battery.......... then he wanted me to purchase extended warranty, a charger, etc
Triumph: did you check their rating on resellerratings?

friend: turns out all this cost over $100
friend: no, it was fairly high on yahoo shopping

Triumph: yeah i've heard of this scam before

friend: well I kept telling him no and he got more and more pissed

Triumph: yup, common scam
Triumph: who was it?

friend: then he wanted to insure the package for $20.......... I said no and he kept saying "are you saying you don't want to insure it gets to you safely? are you saying that? anything could happen to it....." etc
friend: PriceRitePhoto.com

Triumph: hahahaha

friend: so it gets more outrageous when during the initial spiel that if I got the $100 package, he would rush my order free of charge and it would go out today......... when I told him no, he said I would get shipping confirmation after 48 hours......... I asked him why it takes so long since I ordered it 2 days ago......... he reminded me that because I refuse to purchase the package, he can't ship my order until then
friend: son of a bitch

Triumph: yeah this is a common practice with camera retailers for some reaosn

friend: I was ready to kick some ass during this call......... I should have canceled my order altogether

Triumph: and somehow they have a 7.74 resellerratings

Lesson here, never buy from a camera shop located in Brooklyn.

You gotta get close to mad before you call, so you are ready for the hard sell, and stand totally firm. I did get a good deal on several cameras, and would do it again. Don't even listen to their pitch, and get them to confirm exactly what they are selling you, such as this a complete camera kit with battery, strap, lens, lens cap, instructions, and so on. If they don't say yes, then keep asking till they do say "exactly" what you will receive.

I have save hundreds of dollars on two SLR's (film and digital) I purchased from these online camera stores (but I always call their 800 number to order). Don't waver at all and they will figure out pretty soon you won't bite, and you will get your deal.

No call back to try "up sell" as often happens with online order, and I did get the cameras within 2 or 3 days of placing my order, plus CC charges were exactly what I was told on the call.

heh I coulda told you that... those are the some of the shadiest people I've seen in person.

Gotta go with the big boys with electronics purchases. I just bought an SD400 from buydig.com last night near midnight, free ground shipping. It's already shipped out with no further communication (sell tactics) from them. That's the way business should be done.

This is nothing new, I avoid ALL camera dealers from NY.

Even if it's buydig.com which has a good reputation.

bhphotovideo.com

no probs. one of the best places to buy with competitive pricing. its not rock bottom pricing - but there's a reason for that...

Same here!

Always bought my cameras locally! Local places always treat me like a real customer and not an online sale!

You will not find a better shop than B&H. They have been around for 30 years or so and are one of the largest in the world.

I am looking forward to visiting the BM store in a few weeks.

1 of the few shops worth buying from located out of NY

The reason is probably their large overhead. 😉

I paid $376 shipped for my sd400 from buydig.com... bhphotovideo.com would cost me $410 shipped + tax. That's a huge difference: $69 for me. I'll stick with buydig.com and their quick/no-hassle handling thank you.

what's so bad about NY

the camera shops blow goat nuts
Nah, you guys are just wusses. I love going into these shops and haggling with the guys over stuff. They get so worked up, it's hilarious. I guess some people are different types of bargain hunters. I always feel better about a purchase if I worked for it, especially if it required almost coming to blows with the seller! 😛

Went with Buydig for my last camera purchase 3 years ago. Even with their $25 shipping charge, the camera was still cheaper than anywhere else.

Only bad thing about it was they shipped it so that someone at the address HAD to sign for it (they wouldn't leave it with the aparment office like every other package I get). The FedEX guy was cool about it and made every attempt to catch me at home - luckily he did on the last day they attempted delivery.
