Rectangular dark spot on a 24" widescreen

My old man snagged me a 24" widescreen monitor from his work that they were getting ready to throw out. It's a NEC, model #ASLCD24WMCX-BK. It works great, the only problem is that it has a perfectly rectangular dark spot in the upper left corner, about 6"x3" area. And I don't mean black, just dark. I can see all the pixels there, that area is just darker than the rest of the screen. I plan on cracking open the case tomorrow and see if I can figure out whats going on. My google skills have failed me when it comes to this particular monitor problem. I have an electronics background but I have never worked on a LCD before, so I'm just wondering if anyone out there has seen this problem before and could point me in the right direction as to what I should be looking for when I open this up. Thanks

Post a pic if you can, I suspect you are looking at a defect similar to one I have in one of my 2407WFP screens in which a portion of the bezel siding (internal bezel component, not external) has peeled away and curled back into the viewing area between the backlight and the active display components.

I intended to get mine fixed but I stopped noticing it months ago and I haven't thought about it in a long time. Kinda like getting that first door ding on your brand new car, irritating because you lose the new car feel but at the same time you question whether its worth $400 to get it fixed back to that pristine look.
