ok I was in the IRC chan today thinking hey it would be cool if we let fellow anandtecherz use our server as the "unofficial offical" chat server, well that got shot down like a goose by a few fellows in there, mainly the person who runz the server. so I was thinking, what could we do to increase recruting for team anandtech. of course people like when they get goodies like E-mail or chatrooms or other stuff like that, so what features should we offer to help promote the team and possibly get more members?

To briefly put forward reasons stated in IRC for those not present:
Narzy suggested using my server, and associated leaf(s) as a fully public server for all forum users.
Primarily the server was set up to move away from people joining and spamming, e.t.c., and to offer a better IRC service to users. At the moment, to my knowledge, everything runs perfectly, and everyone enjoys it, and other than one Sandrock/rat there has never been any problems with users). BK at least agrees with this.

Then, assuming 10% of forum membership use it, and do chat a good bit, bandwidth charges would be substantial to put it mildly i.e. at least 3 0s. ;) Efnet servers needs DS3s to work ;).

Also, I am not prepared to offer a server to do this, even if someone pays me for the bandwidth, as for a start it would definatly get hacked, and that would mean the real work of the server would be affected.

As I tried to explain to Narzy, I'm glad to give small groups irc, such as the TAxRival #earth clan, Promisance for Genie, and so on, so if any other TA group i.e. wants an irc room, I'll be glad to tell them how to add a bot, and get X if they need it. :)

it might be that way, but I figure with another old saying, it takes money to make money, in this case it takes effort to get members. this is just another way of doing it, I am looking currently at setting up an IRC server just for that, bkehoe has offered his assistance even tho I was a complete jack ass to him ealier. lets see where this goes :).

I am always looking forward to a good challenge involving servers and linux..

let me know if I can be of any assistance.. tho I don't really see how it will increase recruiting at all.. especially if it is a seperate server from the TA server..
