Recroom TV, $600

I recently divorced and bought a house. I have a 52" 1080P Samsung LCD for the living room, I'd like to keep that there, though I would consider moving it to the basement recroom. For some reason, I have been thinking about going plasma just to give it a whirl, to try something different. This TV will be used maybe for Wii for my son and watching Packer games when I have buddies over (I'll let them smoke in the basement recroom, not the upstairs and I care much less if food/beer get spilled on the old furniture in the recroom).

A couple of questions.

In my price range I can get a refurbished 51" Samsung plasma that is 720P 600Hz. I think when you are sitting 12" away the difference between 720P and 1080P is probably not huge. But the 600Hz capable panel may actually look better than a 60 or "120"Hz LCD @ 1080P. Thoughs? What would you do and why? How important is the resolution for something like this?

The TV I'm looking at is a refurb. How comfortable would you be with a refurb Samsung plasma?

I'm toying with the idea of this TV.

Otherwise the local Best Buy has an open box 43" Insignia plasma for $350. I'm pretty tempted due to the price. It is big enough, though a bit more wouldn't hurt.

I guess I'd like some opinions on these options, I'm not sure which direction to go. I probably won't be buying until next week, and this is a second TV so it isn't a must-buy-now situation.

Thanks for the feedback.

Walmart and Sears were selling 50" Panasonic 720P plasmas for less than $500 new a few months ago. Might want to try looking around.

FWIW I bought (two actually) an Insignia 55" LED 1080p 120hz from best buy about 6 months ago for $650... slightly above budget but its a great tv for the money
