Can anyone shed some light on how easy it is to recover from a RAID controller failure?
Currently I have a RAID 1+0 array running on an onboard SiI 3114 controller. If the unfortunate happens and the motherboard explodes (but the hard drives survive), could I drop the drives into a replacement motherboard with the same controller and reinitialize the array without loss of data? What about a board with a different SiI controller?
More importantly, can that be accomplished with Intel's ICHxR chipsets? The above setup is going to be decommissioned in a couple months to be replaced by a system with a RAID 5 array on an ICH10R based board. I've seen several comments on other forums that RAID arrays can easily be migrated between any Intel controllers ICH6 and later, but the posters are never positive of this. :
And, last but not least... I'll be creating a RAID-5 array on a higher-end controller card soon. Contenders are 3ware 9690 card or Areca 1222 (leaning toward the 9690). Can either/both of these cards rebuild arrays on a new card if I have to replace a failed one?
