Recovery from format? Suggestions please.

My secondary IDE HD just got reformatted (don't ask how, its a long story). Can people suggest utilities that will allow me to recover the data? I found one called EasyRecovery that seems like it will to the trick but it cost $90. I'm willing to spend the money if I have to but I'm not rich so I would like to find a cheaper option. Any suggestions?
