Recovery Console Question

I have a computer with that old "missing or corrupted \windows\system32\config", my question is, will I be able to use a newer version of say Windows XP Pro SP2 to repair Windows XP Pro SP1? and will Windows XP Home also be able to repair XP Pro and vice versa? I know, dumb question!
 
Yes, assuming by "repair" you mean "boot into Recovery Console using the CDROM and do things, like copying the config|sam|system|software files from \repair to \config after making appropriate backups".
