Recovery after a format

I have a friend that accidentally formatted the wrong hard drive that contain all his important documents and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good program that could still recover the data. Thank you any help is appreciated.

if when he formatted the drive he didn't write unformat information to the drive then recovery is impossible. the data is gone

In most cases, unless a security "wipe" is done, formatting does not overwrite the data with "0's" and it is still there, but probably beyond the capability of any normal user with no clean room. If it is valuable, it can be recovered at a cost. On-Track does that for a living.
