I recently had a guy contact me about recovering info on a laptop i no you can use a bootable version of linux to veiw the drive and recover the files. What i want to know is what is it called and where can i download it. I think its like Canopix or something. Or do you have a better way to recover data from a bum lap top drive.

As others have said, Knoppix. There are other bootable Linux disks as well.

Take a look at the following thread:

Insert may also be helpful.

[*]Rescue Disks
Other methods for data recovery:
  • access the drive through a network from another system with a data recovery program installed that can perform network recoveries, such as GetDataBack, or
  • remove the laptop hard drive and install it as a slave in a desktop system with a data recovery program installed. For this, you would need a 2.5" - 3.5" connection converter to attach the laptop drive to a desktop IDE cable.
