My external USB hard drive is flaking out on me and I need to recover the data before it's all gone. All the root directories are still there but inside the first few folders there's nothing there. I don't know what happened but it shows those first few (alphabetical) folders are blank. So I checked the drive properties but the available space is still the same as before when all the data was there.
The rest of the data can be seen sometimes depending on if it's happy or not when I plug it in. So I am getting a new HD tomorrow and doing an IDE copy first using the boot-disk tools they'll provide.
However, after that, I need to see if I can get back all that data that is supposedly not there anymore. So I guess here are my questions:
1) Is there any way to erase the table of contents and have it re-create that?
2) Is there any software that will recover these lost files?
3) Should I even bother ScanDisk'ing or Defragment'ing?
4) What else can I do?
