A friends computer doesn't boot up anymore so he wants to reformat and reinstall Windows. I have his harddrive connected to my computer but I can't access his My Documents directory. is this a protection of WinXP and how do I bypass it?

You need to take ownership of the files in there. Do a search in Windows Help for ownership and it will show you how to do it.

just go to the properties of the folder and you havae to click on a tab to change permissions on it (take ownership as mikecel79 said). if you don't see the appropriate option, there was something you had to change in tools | folder options... (maybe simple file sharing, i really can't remember). it should be pretty easy to figure out, but if you can't, GIYF
