Recovering files from laptop

So my computer illiterate friend said his computer died. I offered to try to recover the files, not knowing it was a laptop. (I was hoping I could just take out the harddrive and pop it into my desktop).

When the computer starts it doesn't boot into Windows - it just says "OS not found." I'm hoping that means the windows installation is messed up but the hard drive contents are intact. Any idea how to recover data if the hard drive is still okay? I popped in an ubuntu disc but the hard drive wasn't mounted when I ran it... it's been a while since I've had to mount hard drives in Linux, but it's giving me the feeling that this hard drive is dead.

use an adaptor to connect the drive to your computer. then buy this. really good piece of software. i had a drive where the entire partition table got screwed (damn partition magic!). used this program to recover the data.
