Recovering files deleted by replacing an older file with a newer?

He was trying to backup his iTunes music folder onto his external hard drive by copying it over (dragging and dropping). Unfortunately, I'd moved the iTunes folder over to the external to free up space for him when he got an SLR and started running out of hard drive space, and I didn't anticipate this little potential screwup. So, he clicked "Replace older file with newer?" without realizing that he was replacing all of his music (which was stored on the external Firewire drive) with an empty iTunes music folder from his iMac's internal drive.
Ironically, he was backing things up in anticipation of installing Leopard, so no Time Machine quick fix.

It's a G4 iMac, running the latest version of 10.3 Panther.

DiskWarrior would be my recommendation. I had a friend who lost a lot of data, and managed to get about 95% of it back with this program.
