I have a win98 system whose drives i copied all data on over the network to my pc. The filesystem was fat32 my pc's NTFS. I took off the read-only attribute off all files after copying them over. Afterwards I realized that all the contents of the drive where compressed in win98, now while searching the contents of the fat32 drives on my pc its not allowing me to copy all files and folders found in a search through XP with (Ctrl+A) it gives the error 'cannot copy file: cannot read from the source file or disk'

right now i am using NTFS get data back on the whole partition that these files are located on to try to unlock them. I need to recover/move them in a way that will allow me to search for the *.JPG files only to burn them to a cd. Anyone have any other ideas as to how i can go about getting just the *.jpg files off the directories of the two drives i copied to my pc while their compressed? or if the compression is even the problem.... i tried the cmd line xcopy didn't work, for some reason it didn't even see the .jpg files when i tried to search... it said 0 files found. i know they're there. win2k doesn't even find them if i search but winxp finds them if i use the picture filter on the search but again doesn't allow me to copy them.. any ideas? will update if NTFS get data back is able to move the data to another directory and allow me to manipulate once its done scanning in approximately 30min.

disclaimer: im fairly ignorant when it comes to most software.

couldnt you just extract them while on the original drive and then transfer them over the network? depending on how many jpgs we are talking about, that may be the quickest way/less tedious way.

the original drive is gone i already nuked it and reformatted. i just copied the files from it over a share to my pc so all i have are the files not the drive in its original format..

i did fix this problem however by using ERD commander cd and booting into the system and going to the directory i copied all the files to and resetting all permissions and haveing them proprigate to child objects it allowed me to copy them after this action was completed. thanks anyways shimsham.
