Recovering data from WD firewire HDD

I added a WD 1394 adapter and 30GB 1394 HDD to a Dual P3 box running Win2K. That was late last summer. The OS slowly unraveled, so I whacked it and installed Win98SE. Now I'm being prompted to format the 1394 drive when I try to install the software to access it. Three questions:
1.) What kind of filing system is being implemented when the drive is formatted by the WD utility?
2.) Is there a way to capture the data presently on the drive?
3.) If so, can it be done using this system as presently configured?
