recovering data from a formated HD - still possible?

i've got a 160GB HD that had 20gb free and during a win XP sp2 full install the drive was deleted by the "press D to delete, press L if you're sure" process and then was quick formatted and windows was installed.

is there any hope of recovering the lost data with a software program anymore?

i posted in another forum but after seeing this thread here, thought i'd try my luck here too.

It is difficult to say if your data can be recovered or not since the layout of the hard drive is not provided with more details. Was the 20GB free on its own partition?

If this drive previously contained one 160GB partition, with the operating system on it, then your data may be recoverable due to your data being physically located farther back on the hard drive. The operating system usually takes the first sections of the hard drive so the reinstall may only have overwritten the previous operating system files.

If this drive previously only contained data, with the operating system on another hard drive, then the current OS installation would have overwritten some of the data.

Most likely, some of your data has been overwritten while other data may be recoverable. Hopefully your drive was recently defragmented.

Install this drive as a slave in another system, and use a data recovery tool like GetDataBack to see if anything has been found, to know for sure.

the drive was a single partition with no OS, has never been defragged, and i already used GetDataBack recently and all it found was deleted files from the windows install from what i understood.

when i replaced the formated drive to another PC windows XP automatically used its system restore feature to monitor the drive and i didn't learn about that until after getdataback searched it... i'm not sure if that helped destroy any chances i might have had, but i disabled the drive monitoring afterwords.
