Does anyone know of the best way (hopefully without purchasing some software) of recovering a corrupted Excel spreadsheet XLS file?

I greatly appreciate any comments/advice. This is sort of a pressing matter today. Thanks.
 
I've had good luck using either Office 2000 or Office 2003 to open corrupt files. Some formatting is usually lost, but the data should be there.
If neither works, try OnTrack Easy Recovery Pro but you have to buy it. It was able to get back some data that 2000/2003 failed at.
