Recover a file after HD has been re-partitioned and formatted????

Yes. Formatting a hard drive only wipes the first copy of the FAT. The 1%... 2%... 3%... counter you see is actually just FORMAT testing for bad sectors and leaving the raw data intact.

A program like Lost & Found from PowerQuest will do the job. It will examine the backup copy of the FAT and the drive itself for clues as to where the deleted files physically reside on the drive. As long as you haven't touched the drive since the accident, you should be OK.

You'll need a second hard drive plugged in to transfer the files away once L&F is done.

I believe there is a free trial version which will tell you what files have a good chance of being recoverable. Even so, the program is so cheap. I picked it up at $20 CDN ($13 US) for a bulk pack from a local store.

dah, I thought maybe that'd help me fix my CDRW! I want it back!! I deleted it the quick way (which just takes off the FAT AFAIK), before I backed it up on harddrive so I could update the disc..

Would that by any chance fix my problem?/
 
well it works for FAT 32 that is version 1.06 and I did it last week.. I recovered data for my girl friend.. when I accidently hosed her system.. thinking she did all her backup before having me a go at reinstalling the OS.

Yes it can be done, depending as long as you didnt change the partitions.. if you ahve.. you can say 99% goodbye.

However if you just did is "take out the partition, put the exact partition back and then format" and not put any data on board, the prognosis is VERY GOOD.

Soccerman--If you just did the kwik, and haven't rewritten to it, you probably can get most back. I can't remember the name of the program...SCSI Mechanic? something tools? I dunno, I just remember comments on a NG a couple years ago. I've never used it. Might have a look at cdrinfo, Andy McFadden's site or links from it, or "heaven forbid"...Richter's junk.
