Recording VGA Output using another Computer...

I have wracked my mind trying to come with a solution to a little dilemma of mine. Basically I want to be able to record the VGA output of a laptop computer that is connected to a digital projector. It is easy enough to get a VGA splitter so that I can get the VGA signal without interfering with the projector but the problem is that I can't find a way to record that VGA output to anything directly.

I want to be able to record it into a digital format like MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 real-time. As of right now the only way is to take the VGA output and connect it to a unit that then would allow me to connect it to a TV and instead connect it to a Video-In. I don't want to lose the quality though. I need to be able to record at 640x480 or better.

I'm sure there's some pro level equipment that can handle vga-in, but I doubt it's practicable price wise...

A part from going the long way round in the solution you mentioned, have you looked at recording on the PC doing the presentation?

Something like Camtasia perhaps?

Problem is that the laptops are typically brought in by clients, so I can't install...trying to capture the media on the way out.

Use a scan converter to send the signal to a vcr. You connect the display as usual and just use a "video capture" card to import the vcr recording afterward. That way you're onlylimited by the length of the tape. No software solution will give you the fps you want.

Something like that should work.
