I have a dish and I want to record shows, but use something better than a vcr and I don't want a monthly fee.

Looks like TiVo might be an option but $250 + $300 lifetime subscription seems a bit high.

Any suggestions, links?

Thanks,
Tom

not sure if they still have the deal, but there was a good one a while back... replay 5040 for 350 or something like that including lifetime subscription.

You know that when they say "Lifetime subscription" they mean the lifetime for the device right? (ie. if you get a newer device you have to pay the lifetime subscription again)

Get a DishPVR. Personally, if I were you I would switch to DirecTV and get a DirecTivo (the best PVR ever).

I think you can transfer subscriptions between different TiVo boxes. Not entirely sure. But for the ReplayTV, it is tied to that specific unit, yes.

No, you technically can't transfer. For a short while, they had a subscription transfer program when the Series2 boxes came out--if you had a Series1 you could transfer your subscription to a new Series2. Hopefully when the next bigger, better Tivo comes out (hopefully supporting HDTV), they'll allow a free subscription transfer.

Ah I see. Well, I stand corrected. :)

If you are a customer of Dish Network, you can get a PVR 501/508 receiver with no subscription fees. I've got one and love it. I'm thinking about adding a second PVR for the bedroom.

Well, if it's not Dish, then it's DirecTV. Get the DirecTivo.
