Can someone please give me a lowdown on what hardware and software I need to get MP3s on my hard-disc to a portable minidisc recorder/player? I've tried searching for this one but nothing seems to give full details, so thanks a lot for the help.

Hi, you could get teh Soundblast 5.1 which has a front panel with optical digital outputs to connect to an MD recorder. Or, if you have an SB Live!Value card (not sure if it works with others) you can buy a Digital I/O card which uses up another PCI bay, not the actual slot. This gives you a conenction to a device with the card which has digital optical in/out too. HTH.

Edit: Link to the Digital I/O card:

My brother bought a SPDIF optical out extension (I think it was 60Marks from Reichelt) for my SB Live and hooks up his MD deck with the optical cable. Since the optical out plays what you hear from the normal soundcard, all he has to do is set up a playlist in Winamp and hit Play and Rec on the PC and MD.

For less quality (its MP3 so you won't be missing too much) hook up the MD to the soundcard, set the recording levels and do the rest like with the optical sollution above.
