Recording guitar

To record an electric or acoustic-electric guitar, can you plug it straight into a PC sound card, or will you have to run it through an amp to give it enough power?

It won't have much gain, as a pickup doesn't produce much voltage or current and it's at a very high impedance. Try going through a POD or a GT-6 and then into your sound card. Even a wah pedal will help. You may find better results with a pre-amp type device (POD / GT-6) first, though.
