I saw some TV tuner cards that can do this, but I don't want to pay for a full blown TV tuner card. I just want to be able to back up my old VHS tape collection onto DVDs or my Hard Drive.

Does anyone know how I can do this and what card/device I need? Maybe you know a forum that deals specifically with these things? Thanx in advance.

PS: I know there are some combo players that have VHS/DVD in one, but that will be my last resort. I'm looking for alternatives.

Well, it depends, do you want to do it, or do you want to do well?

Are these retail VHS or home movies?

Your options are as you said a capture card OR the easier and probably better method is to get a DVD recorder for about the same money and transfer them to DVD-RW .

Once the disc is recorded take it to your computer and re-author it with menus chapter points etc.

IF these are retail you will need to by-pass the copy protection, these devices can be found on ebay or other online sources.

Also depending on the quality of the tape(s) you may require a TBC or Time Based Corrector ($200.00) which will help stabilize the signal as it transfers from a VHS machine to the dvd recorder and make it cleaner.

If you decide to go the capture card route, your PC looks fast enough to do the job, but do not skimp on the quality of the capture card...get one that is hardware based not software....it will make all the difference.

if you have any more questions you can PM me....either way you go...it's not going to be cheap....if you want a good result.

why not a standalone dvd-recorder? you playback from your vcr, record directly to dvdr.

If $60-100 is too much for a DVD recorder (easy) or Hauppage card (much more work), then do you really care enough to do this at all?

You can get a $20 capture card but they have problems with audio going out of sync and dropped frames.
