I decided to start transferring ALL my old audio cassettes to digital files in the computer and maybe make them CDs....

I remember reading before that LINE In was the preferred path, but my M6805 doesn't have line in.... :( So, this leaves only with the MIc port available.

It is important to mention that the sound quality of the tapes is not exactly DOLBY digital.... many of them are compilations from AM radio stations.... so sound quality is decent at best.

Should I get a USB or any external sound card?
If so, which one?
Am I fine just using the MIC port?
Would a regular cassette player work fine?

I am thinking recording directly to.WAV 44 kHz 16 bits stereo, then do the cleaunup of the files (remove hiss, pop, etc) and finally convert them to MP3. Does it sound fine?

Suggestions welcome!

Try it and see. Compare the sound to the original; see if you notice a difference. If you want to get a USB card, I reccomend my M-audio transit. But most others will work fine - line input isn't very difficult. A good player is probably more important.
I'd advise against using cleanup. It will harm the sound. It may be technically possible to do well, but when I've tried it has caused more harm than good. If it's music you're transferring that is.
Why do you need your stuff on computer anyway? Seems like it would take a lot of time to get something that is inferior even to cassette.
