Recordable DVD

How fast do you think the price will come down. I can't wait. I got so many home movie that I want to transfer to DVD media.

I've seen the Hitachi GF 2050 DVD RAM drive for $400 or so. But isn't the big problem that the format is completely incompatible with standalone DVD players? Or am I wrong?

right dvd-RAM usually wont work with standalone players or dvd-rom drives with computers for that matter...

hafta get a dvd-r most likely to ensure compatability, but they are pricey, check egay to get a feel for the prices on them...

DVD-RW and DVD+RW drives are out now. Internal IDE versions are about $750-800 if you look around, and external SCSI versions going for over $1500 easy. DVD-RW claims compatibility with most DVD players, while DVD+RW claims compatibility with all DVD players.

I don't understand why they want to confuse consumers. It's obviously the one that's compatable with what you already have will take off.

compatability with what though?

DVD+RW claims to be more compatible, but it is also a less standardized format
than DVD-RW. Neither is proven yet in the mass market to which is more
compatible with the players out there.

An older writeup that describes the differences can be found at:

even with a recordable DVD drive on the computer tranfering VHS to DVD is a long and complicated process that probably involves playback using a VIVO cable card. I'd suggest waiting for some kind of consumer set top dvd recorder for doing that.

Silly question, but if you wanted to backup a DVD where does setting the region come into it? Or would ib like burning an image, it's done automatically.

:frown:

Anyway...if DVD-R did work on standalone DVD players....I would imagine that blank DVD's costing more than the DVD movies bought at the store 🙁

I'm pretty the blank DVD will be expensive like CDR media when It was first introduced. Now the blank CDR is dirt cheap.

You can pick up blank dvds for around $10 each now. Players are going for ~$700 right now, by the end of the year it'll be ~$500, and by next summer less than $300 (ok, $299).

And then you also have to consider blue laser dvd.
