Record something from a phone.

A co-worker's son passed away recently, and she was wondering if there was a way I could record his voicemail greeting. She called the number to show me, and it seemed like it was good quality from her phone.

I was considering bringing a mic from home, turning on the speaker phone option on her phone, then recording it.

Is there a better way?

You could try dialing from skype on your computer and recording 'what u hear' or the setting that your audio card supports, into sound recorder. You can then convert the .wav to a .mp3 and send it.

I know my SE W810i allows me to record conversations to a file on my phone, and then I can move that anywhere I want
 
Wow, that's a great idea! I hadn't even thought of that. I may give it a shot later.

I made a recording using the web cam mic on my laptop screen, and it really didn't turn out too bad. I just held the phone speaker up to one of the mic holes and recorded it that way. Then I put an MP3 on her phone and burned a CD as well.
 
Most phones I have used have an earpiece/headphone port. That uses a mini-jack. Get a patch cable with a mini jack at either end and connect the phone to the speaker input of a PC or laptop, and then record it.

Honestly, I thought the same thing. There's a sound recorder built into the phone, very handy, and when I am on the line, I can activate it. It records the entire conversation, it includes both people. This is the stock Cingular/AT&T/Whatever they're called this week's, firmware.
 
As long as one of the partys consents to the recording, it is legal.

Legality

There are 12 states which require consent by both partys. Texas is not one of them. 🙂
