Record player!

Hey all

I'm at university right now and decided that a record player would just be a great investment. However, searching for "record player" on ebay turns up with about 900 results and narrowing it down to audio still has 140, but I can't tell if these are any good. All I'm looking for is a small player w/ built in speakers at no more than 80 dollars. If any of you guys have recommendations (where, what, to buy), please let me know.

What you're describing will sound like crap. Do yourself a favor and just get a real turntable and a headphone amp or something similar.

Wow ... I wasn't expecting the first response to be this ignorant. Record players produce a different sound, and some rather like it (myself included).

I also think it's funny that you mention to "get a cd player" because we're heading away from cd's and towards storage devices for music such as the iPod and the other mp3/music players. Troll someone else's thread please.

I realize that a turntable would be better, but I don't have the room for extra speakers and the goal is simplicity. If you could help out w/ any merchants, that'd be great. At least a decent company would be appreciated.

NurBucket is right. Most assembled "record players" were designed to be commercial players more intended as pieces of furniture that made sound than as high quality phonograph systems. Get a decent turntable and separate speakers and amp.

There is a side benefit to this setup. You can plug in a CD player and compare the sound of an original analog phonograph record anda CD re-issue of the same material. It's a great way to show the differences.
 
Many "audiophiles" prefer the sound of vinyl (whatever sound that is), but if the record player has built-in-speakers, getting nice sound will probably be hit-and-miss.
 
I think I saw a record player at radio shack recently, forget the price and pretty sure it didn't have a speaker built in... but I really don't remember. I was just suprised they still sell them. Anyway take a shot at it...

EDIT 1:Something like this coupled with a headphone amp would suit your needs. Or, you could pipe this into your computer's line input (if you've got decent speakers).

EDIT 2:Add an amp like this and you'll be set.

I have this same one in black. Scroll down to the Refurbished one...its slightly more than you want to spend but it looks pretty sweet and sounds great.
