Wow, now I need a gun to protect me from the lunatics who though it necessary to buy an assault rifle because Barack Obama was elected.

They thought it necessary because Barack Obama's .gov website clearly states he wants to ban the sale of those items.

He also wants to curb the spread of nuclear weapons, does that mean I should feel compelled to go out and buy one? As the second amendment does not specify what "arms" means, I think it seems perfectly reasonable for the government to come up with a definition that allows people to defend themselves without allowing them access to weapons that are far more lethal than necessary. I'm not sure the language of the previous assault weapons ban drew a good line, but I'm not opposed to SOME kind of line. Is it really necessary to buy something you don't need just because it might be banned in the future?

If only you could come with a patent on that "semi-lethal" weapon. "This is only gonna kill you a little bit" or "This one only kills you until the police arrive to put you in cuffs..."

Bad guys will always have guns, get this, because they ignore the laws.

You guys saying that it's crazy to buy these guns are aware of Obama's history when it comes to gun control, right? I really doubt that any one is buying these guns to protect themselves from Obama, but that they won't be available to buy in the not too distant future.

I think it's kind of ironic how so many people complain that Bush is eroding the constitution with some of his policies, yet the lefties would have no problem with Obama doing the same to the 2nd amendment.

Slow, the left has always been about mandating morals and ideals...heck it is why in my state they tell you that you cannot smoke in a bar, they raise taxes on cigarettes and tobacco astronomically to discourage sales.... they make it impossible for you to buy a gun, or it took them forever to allow people to buy alcohol on the weekends even though they lost alot of business to their neighbor from the north...they mandate that people who make over 30K a year buy their own health care at nearly $400 per month or face a tax penalty...I can go on...

So long as they feel what they regulate is justified or for the greater good then they have no reservations about limiting or removing those freedoms, plain and simple.

Face it, guns sales are up because the gun retailers are quite rightfully exploiting the paranoia of a certain segment of society. You guys are playing yourselves for fools.

Funny how you jump to the most illogical conclusion possible. The large increase in gun sales, especially high-cap mags and "assault" rifles, has absolutely nothing do to with:

"Address Gun Violence in Cities: As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets" -from Obama's Change.gov website

Naw, that couldn't have anything to do with the increased sales.

No doubt Stalin thought the same to his own opposition. You're a marked man, wishing for the death of others is hardly liberal.

I bet the sales of Bibles and vice grips are up too as the poor sad Rednecks attempt to better cling to the only Prozac they know.

Yep. The magazines are flying off the shelfs like hotcakes. Granted it only takes a few seconds to change a magazine it's nice to be able to shoot 30 or 100 rounds without changing one.

Yo twit, newsflash: you've never needed a gun to protect yourself from those who buy such weapons legally. In fact, you are probably safer with actual responsible gun owners all around you... Imagine that!

We are here for you!

Name calling? I don't see any good in frenzied people buying stockpiles of automatic weapons and ammunition in reaction to the election of Barack Obama.

If the policeman down the corner only has a handgun, I don't want you having an MP-5. No offense.

Overreact much!? Who said anything about "automatic" weapons?!

There is a difference, ya know. Nobody is talking about "automatic" weapons. Assault rifles are nothing more than hunting rifles with lighter parts and higher capacity magazines -- and they're not normally "automatic." As for me, I actually prefer semi-automatic (one bullet per trigger pull) rifles... Even MP5's come in semi-auto configurations... so, is it just the fact they look scarier that bothers you!? This run on guns isn't for the "automatic" variety, it's for the higher capacity magazines and anything that might "look" like an "assault rifle." Joe Sixpack isn't running around with an FFL...

get a clue.

EDIT: also, for what it's worth, I don't think Obama and his Democrat Congress will touch the gun issue anytime soon -- at least, not during his first term. I think most of the hype around a "gun ban" is just that, hype. Obama has much bigger fish to fry, and the Dems won't do anything to risk their chance at eight years of total power...

I wouldn't even bother trying to talk with someone who thinks people are stock piling automatic weapons because Obama was elected. They are too far gone to have a rational discussion with.

He's the type that thinks the MP-5 should be illegal because it's black and scary looking, but an M1 Garand would be fine since it has a wooden stock.

Obama said the right is desparately clinging to their guns and religion. The right denied it.

As usual, Obama was right and the right was wrong.

You think its only hardcore righties that own guns?

No wonder they say the left is out of touch....

If you look at the chart on the linked article...it appears as though October or end of the year is when most guns are purchased. One can assume that's because of hunting season and maybe Christmas purchases. There were 1.183m background checks this year which was an increase compared to 2007 yes but lower than 2006 where there were 1.250m or something like that. And if you look at the trend it started to increase gradually in 2004 at the start of Bush's second term. People had no idea who was going to win the presidency let alone the Democratic or Republican primaries.

Also it looks like there was a spike when the tech bubble burst so it looks like it's more an indicator of economic uncertainty rather than who is elected President :p. Things have got progressively worse since 2004...and the gun sales show people's feelings on the issue.

Nice analysis. Be careful, a lot of angry libs on here are already convinced lock stock and barrel (pun intended) that it's because of Obama, so you might get some unfriendly feedback!

It doesn't surprise me that gun sails are up in Tennessee and probably all across the South. Economic depression and a poor economy doesn't change the human need for protein, and with the price of gas so high there's simply not enough road kill to go around.

I cant afford any new guns at the moment. So I'm just going to stock up on some magazines for what I have and what I want.

Hopefully early next year I will be able to buy another AK (so I have a spare for myself or my significant other) and then pick up a couple of stripped AR lowers.

Good question with so many righties saying Obama is the anti-christ.

By "so many" do you mean a group here and there?

What is wrong with you delusional righty tighties, if you think an army of ill trained militias armed with Ak-47's is going to be able to stand up against one army tank, jet plane, or a company of howitzers, you might wish to contact the surviving members of the branch dividians. When they had the element of surprise, they managed to repel one initial assault, but within a day, they were totally surrounded and totally outgunned.

Sadly many of these assault weapons now being purchased by misguided but other wise honest people, will find their way into the hands of criminals over the course of five or 10 years.

Misguided because they want to own a rifle? I don't tell you what to spend your money on. At least a rifle holds it value, and if it gets banned from retail sale then it's value increases even more.
