Question REconnecting ZIF cable

I'm trying to reconnect some ZIF ribbon cables inside a Galaxy Tab. I'm having a lot of trouble. The little lever is "up'.

The problem is that the plastic sticking out at the end of the cable is so bendy, I can't reconnect the cable. The plastic covering just flops about. Can I cut it off flush with the end of the cable itself?
