Would the Seasonic 500W I have be adequate?
Would I see much improvement going to a 7950gt?

I just checked the evga site and definitively yes, your seasonic ps is more than enough for the 8800gts 640.

Here are the evga reqs. from their website:
e-GeForce 8800GTS 640MB
Part Number: 640-P2-N821-AR
Requirements
Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 26 Amp Amps)

Here are your seasonic ps specs.:
Silent Seasonic S12 500 Watt ATX 12V V2.0 PSU
+3.3V +5V +12V1 +12V2 -12V +5Vsb
30A 30A 17A 16A 0.8A 2A

Your 17A + 16A on the two 12 V rails is 31 Amps

You are good to go.

I think I am right behind you and will get one too.

I'd sell your 7800 and spring for an 8800GTS (either 320mb or 640mb depending on your budget). Should be a huge jump compared to a modest jump for a 7950GT.

That 640MB GTS is $340, not $310. It's not $310 unless 6-8 weeks later you get a rebate check in the mail. You're paying $340 for it today if you buy it.

We get that you hate rebates. Its $340 before rebates, and $310 after rebates. If you are fine with rebates think of it as $310, if you aren't its $340.
