I've used turbotax online for that last few years. I have a very simple return however. Single/No children/No write offs

It's 9.99 for the very simple return, 19.99 for slightly more complex.

See my above edit. Intuit's Tax Freedom can be free to certain individuals. I think it's the same requirements as 1040ez.

Federal is free if you fit the requirements but state you usually have to pay to file like $9. At least thats what i get here in NY.

AGI of less than $50,000. Last year, anyone could file free Federal through TurboTax via the IRS link. The tax preparation software companies lobbied Congress and they changed it to an adjusted AGI. I might file via paper just because it pisses me off. The money spent via government to allow online filing is more than justified vs having someone sitting at the IRS entering the data in, IMO>
