Recommended system for newsgroup downloads, Winrar?

My primary use for the system would be downloading large file from newsgroups and decoding them with Winrar. I would probably be downloading one or more files and Winraring another, all at the same time. And I'd be browsing the web, too. I also do gaming, but exclusively adventure types that almost never require the high frame rates that Halo, UT, etc. require.

Obviously, this use profile is going to place a lot of load on the disk subsystem, but also on the CPU/memory subsystem as well. I DO understand that, dollar for dollar, Athlon 64's outperform P4s on 90% of the performance benchmarks, but for my intended use I'm thinking that a Prescott-based system with NCQ support would make the most sense. I'm not at all familiar with overclocking P4's, but I've read that the Asus P5GD2 Premium is a great MB for OCing. I was originally planning on a Athlon Winchester-based system, where I wouldn't have to worry about cooling. But with a P4, I realize that's not the case. So cooling recommendations would be appreciated.

I'm thinking that having three separate SATA HDs would be a good idea: one for the OS, one for downloading files, and one to do the decoding to.

Finally, there's the question of memory. I know a lot about DDR, but next-to-nothing about DDR2 (other than having read an AT review that said the OCZ Platinum Enhanced Bandwith Rev 2 DDR2-533 SDRAMS are fantastic). But $380 for two 512MB modules seems excessive.

So, what CPU/cooler (if necessary)/MB/RAM combintion would you recommend for a bang-for-the-buck, overclockable system? For Athlon 64 systems, I know the answers, but for P4 systems, I'm clueless.

well downloading files takes practically no CPU, and no real disk burden either since its usually downloading at a fairly slow rate. So you don't need much of a system at all for that. Winrar might scale based on your system, but honestly, it might be the difference between a huge file taking 2 minutes to unrar vs. 1 minute. I don't really think that kind of periodic activity really warrants spending extra money. So really, I think any modern system will handle your needs just fine, no need to really spend any money on anything other than value-priced components (especially memory, $380 for 1gig of memory is just an insane waste of money no matter what you plan to do with your system).

But downloading AND winraring simultaneously would stress the HD-subsytem, right? Also, I've read that foreground tasks (such as web surfing) suffer on Athlon 64 systems when a CPU/RAM-intensive task (such as winraring) is going on in the background, an issue which is much less of a concern on a Hyperthreading P4 system.

You don't need DDR2, you could choose the ASUS P5GD1 which supports DDR, or the P5GDC that supports DDR and DDR2.

For Data compression the Athlon 64 is better. Check this:

You're right that you want NCQ support. For that, check out the nForce4 Ultra motherboards (Chaintech VNF4 Ultra is a good value).

For memory you can go with Corsair Value Select (Dual Pack) 184 Pin 512MBx2 DDR PC-3200 - OEM, and for CPU an Athlon 64 3000+ or 3200+.

Interesting. I'd been basing my conclusion on some Divx encoding results I saw in an AT review, in which the P4's kicked Athlon 64 butt. I would MUCH rather build a Winchester/NF4 Ultra-based system, especially since I'm up to speed on them.

Trust me, I've done exactly what you plan on both fast A64 Systems and a Mid-High End P4 System and I can say, without a doubt, that those tasks were a joy on the P4 system and sluggish at best on the A64 systems (both NF3 and NF4). I wouldn't trade my A64 system for the world, as games are what I want the most speed for, but for decoding with winRAR, yEnc, and the like, and I don't know if this is due to hyperthreading, I would take the P4 hands down.

Which gets me back to my original question. Anybody have any system recommedations?

I would recommend:

Motherboard: ABIT AG8, ASUS P5GD1 or ASUS P5GDC Deluxe
Processor: Highly-recommended that you wait until February for the Pentium 4 600 to come out; if you can't wait, go for the 2.8 or 3.0GHz Prescott LGA775 (520,530).
Memory: Here I can't help you much... I think I would choose value Corsair or Mushkin RAM for about $130 and leave them at DDR400 when overclocking the FSB.
Video card: Sapphire X300 for $80 shipped, or the ABIT RX300SE-Guru ($94), which has a 128-bit memory interface. This ABIT "Guru" card is great because it has an amazing overclocking potential. You'll find some reviews where they overclock it from 325/400 to 558/500, which improves the 3DMark01 score by 40%!
HD: Maxtor DiamondMax 10 with 16MB cache and NCQ support is a good deal, 300GB storage for $200.

EDIT: I forgot about cooling... most A64 coolers are compatible with LGA775, like the Thermalright XP-90 and Zalman CNPS7700-AlCu.
