Recommended Space To Keep Free?

I know that completely filling up a hard drive is a bad idea-you don't want to have it up to capacity. So, what percentage of the hard drive space is recommended to be free? In other words, I have a 9 gig hard drive, how much space should I have free? Thanks.

I always try really hard to not go below 2 gigs free...

2 gigs is also the barrier that i aim for.

i would say at least have 700mb-1gb free on th OS partition at all times if possible
