Recommended Scanners?

I just sold my current scanner (UMAX Astra 3400) so it's time to upgrade. 😀

My last two were from UMAX and I was very happy with them. So, my first thought was, "I'll just grab an Astra 4400." However, I thought I'd see what other people here are using and recommend.

Since I have a great digital camera my scanning requirements are modest. I mostly scan photos of products from my company's catalog so that I can digitally edit them and incorporate them into sales fliers for faxing. I also scan some family photos and the infrequent text document.

Naturally I want a USB connection. Two other desireable features: an on-off switch and a lid that's hinged on a long side rather than the short end.

The Epson 1650 is a nice scanner my stepdad has the photo version and scans so old slides and it works great but they make it in 2 versions one that does slides and negatives and just a regular one. I have been very happy with Epson scanners.

Ive always had great service from my Microtek scanners, however I only use SCSI. Microtek is always on top the situation with current drivers for the current OS. I even have an older ScanMaker III that is fully supported and works great in WinXP, ALONG WITH THE SOFTWARE. So many companies leave you out in the cold for OS support. I was amazed at the performance of my daughter's very inexpensive USB Colorado I got from Office Depot. For a 70 dollar scanner it does very well. Just a couple ideas.

i still have my UMAX

i would like to go to scsi as i hate haveing my machine slowed down by the paralell port one i have now

Thanks for the replies. Microtek is certainly a well-respected name when it comes to scanners. It's nice to know their support, even for "legacy" products is also first rate.

I know what you mean about parallel port scanners, Jen. A USB connection is far superior to parallel in that regard.

A couple of my buddies and my mom have the Canoscan 650U and like them. My friends throw it in the carrying case with their laptops so they can use them anywhere, they don't require a power supply. You can find the newer model, the 670U for under $100.

Hmmm, haven't really had a problem with scanners before. I have a visioneer here and have had no problems with it. The only problem I've ever had was with a friends scanner. It had been shipped half way across the us and the little thingy that actually moves was stuck when you turned it on and just made a grinding noise. I thought, hmmm, void the warranty? I found a screw driver and I bent the one piece of metal back that was messing up the sensor and the scanner has worked flawlessly since then😀

You should get a parallel to usb cable, and make you scanner usb.
