For a Intel Celeron D 326 2.53 GHz CPU @ 533FSB. Okay, I guess my question is this. Do you buy RAM based on MOTHERBOARD specs...or by CPU speed?

Max RAM speed/size for the Dell that I'm rebuilding is PC4200, but that was when I had a 3.6 Prescott in it. Now I've dropped the CPU to the one mentioned above So, can I stick with PC4200, or do I drop it down to PC3200?

I have always gone by mobo model. But I also read reviews to find out which modules are working best with a given mobo.
 
It will depend on the MoBo whether it uses ddr or ddr2 RAM. Since that cpu is s775, you probably have a MoBo that supports ddr2, maybe up to ddr2-667? Which MoBo do you have? Then maybe we can help you out a bit more.

Dell mobo, will have to check model # or whatever. I do know that it supports DDR2 and yes Socket is LGA775. Not looking for specific brand yet, just need to know speed. Talked to Dell (they don't know too much), nut was able to get that the max memory speed is PC4200. What I'm wondering is...is that too fast for the Celeron CPU, since it's like 2.53GHz not like the 3.6GHz that I had in before rebuild.
