Recommended p4 heatsinks?

Y'ello,

I'm trying to decide on a heatsink for a new p4 upgrade, and I'm trying to find something which will give me a nice balance between performance and low noise. I'm almost positive that whichever hsf I buy, i'm going to replace the fan with a vantec stealth 80mm fan. I guess my question is since i'm replacing the fan, which hs unit(s) out there would give me very good performance even with a lower cfm fan attached? I was looking between the $30 - 50 (USD) range for the heatsink itself.

any help would be appreciated!

I like my Vantec Aeroflow quite well, but you won't be able to use a Stealth on it. I have the Alpha 8045 on an AMD setup and it works quite well. There's a P4 version, but I just don't remember the numbers..

Get one from a company called Intel, I think they know what they are doing.

alpha pal8942 <--thats the p4 version of pal8045

swiftech mcx4000

either one of those will work with a really low cfm fan as they are big enough to absorb the heat first.

volcano 7 will also work, but temps will be higher i would imagine

If you don't like working with HSF and having to take off your motherboard from your case, then I'd suggest either sticking with the stock Intel or get an AVC Sunflower. Otherwise either an Alpha or Swiftech are great units - definately worth the work and runs much cooler than the stock units with a quieter fan.

Back when I had a P4...oh...those were the days...I used the Alpha PAL8942 heatsink. Very very high quality and it kept the CPU cool, no matter what you were doing.

My only recommendation is to get it when you first install the P4 CPU...it's a major pain in the buttocks if you have a fully installed and working rig to unscrew the mainboard from the case. :) :p Believe me...I know from experience. ;)

Good luck!

I use both the Volcano 7+ and Vantec Aerofloe VP4 - like the Vantec unit much more since it is real easy to install, works much better than the Intel Stock at load only (same at idle) and looks good.

I have a volcano7 on my amd machine right now and i'm not really happy with it. looking for bigger and better things
:)

Does anyone know whether or not the mcx4000 requires specific motherboards in order to work? i'm going to be using the gigabyte 8ihxp and i don't believe it has the mounting holes that the alpha requires

Suprised nobody mentioned the Thermalright AX-478. I recall seeing good reviews of it. It's probably the most inexpensive unit to take an 80mm fan directly. As a few people mentioned, consider the stock Intel HSF, depending on how high of an overclock you expect. People were overclocking 1.6a/1.8a to great heights with the stock cooler.

download the manual and check it out in teh pics
if it doesnt have the holes, neither the alpha or swiftech will work

i meant to say volcano 7+, its actually pretty good. my friends p4 1.6a@2.6 is around 35C idle and low forties under max load at medium fan setting(which isnt too loud)

Gotta give another mention for the stock hs/f. I have a 1.6 northwood at 2.4 with no problems. I've read reviews on other coolers and they do shave a few degrees, but is it worth the $$. Stock sounds like the best bang for the buck...

Intel has come a long way since the old days. Their late model coolers are really very good. I'd start with the stock model, play it by ear...

So someone agrees with me on the stock Intel unit!!! You guys are always worried about "the best bang for the buck", so you buy a cheap MB/processor then spend $50 on a HS/fan!! Go figure. R
