Recommended normal HSF for 1.2G Tbird?

I've got an Epox 8TKA3 and 1.2G T-bird coming in soon and about the only thing I have left to hunt down is the HSF. Local PC shop sells the CoolerMaster (the -51) with their >1Ghz T-birds. I just don't know enough about the CoolerMaster to really trust it; my other (safe) choice is a FOP32-1. I'm not really planning on overclocking (unless a miraculous event suddenly doubles the free time in my life :), but I do want to be on the safe side - the system will have a Geforce GTS, 7200rpm HD, 350W PS, etc, so I feel it'll be on the warm side.

Opinions needed, ~$10 and a quick drive downtown for the CoolerMaster; or ~$25 and the mail order-wait for the FOP-32-1? This is the first system I'm building and I wanna get it right! Any info on the CoolerMaster appreciated, thanks.

I recommend the Taisol CGK742092. With the stock fan, they are quite and perform well. If you want added insurance, but more noise, upgrade it to the Delta 37cfm. Nerdsbyte will allow you to configure the hsf when you buy it. Don't forget some good case cooling as well.

Daddy,

I have an Inwin S500, and plan on placing 80mm fans in the front and rear slots, as well as doing a little hacking of the plastic holes in the front casing to increase airflow. Is that sufficient for case cooling? (I'm not planning to overclock)

arbiter,

If you're not overclocking, it should be okay. The taisol that DaddyG recommends is a nice, quiet, good performing solution.

Mike

P.S. i'm not entirely sure it fits on your board, though.

Thx Mike,

Reason I had settled on the GlobalWin FOP32-1 was that I had read good reviews about it, about a $20 part, and its design didn't seem to have any problems fitting any mobo's esp with it's fin design clearing nearby caps. Sort of wondering if it was overkill (cooling-wise) if I wasn't going to be oc'ing, though, because it would be far more convenient and cheaper for me to go with the local store's CoolerMaster.

Arbiter,

I don't believe that there is such a thing as 'overkill' when cooling 1.2gig BIRDS. These babies put out more than 55watts if memory serves me. The extra fans, and the increased noise, are well worth it.

Good, clean power and cooling equals 'one happy BIRD' !! :)

Mikewarrior I just bought in the last week from 2cooltek and assume it has the new clip ....

In your opinion what is the best way to apply thermal compound...The last chip I o/c and my first attempt was a piii700 with GORB which came with preapplied compound on the HS

Thanks for your help

Make sure that you don't have the clip flipped 180. Since it just slides through the fins its possible. The pressure of the clip will be off center when its flipped.
