I am helping a friend put linux on his box, and I want to get him an inexpensive modem as a christmas present that will work in Linux. His POS conexant modem works very poorly under linux (yes, it is a winmodem and I was able to download module drivers to support it, but they are unstable and crash his system). He has no ISA slots, or I would give him one of the ISA USR v90's I have around. So I either need to go external or find an cheap internal PCI modem that will work with Linux. Anyone have anysuggestions?
I noticed a Diamond Supra Express 56K V.90 External USB Modem on pricewatch for $21. Has anyone had any experience with these? Or for that fact USB modems under linux in general? I know I am safe with any external serial modem, but was not sure about external USB modems.
