I have a set of Vasque ankle high boots - they are nice and lightweight, and they are waterproof (gortex). These are possibly the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned, even though they are getting to be old and worn out.

I just wear anything. A friend of mine buys all the expensive stuff when we go hiking, but he's not athletic and he has trouble making it up the mountain. So my tip for you is to get in shape and worry about your conditioning instead of your gear.

Gonna be going on some hikes in the Alps in about 2 months... Any recommended hiking shoe brands?

Whatever you do, make sure you buy them a few months before your big hike and break them in properly. You do not want to be breaking in a new pair of boots on a long hike you paid thousands of dollars just to get to.
