I need a coule of e-mail accounts for my parents. I'd like them to be permanent, preferably pop/smtp, preferably inexpensive. I could get hotmail accounts which should be permanent and try to get outlook/outlook express to download e-mail automatically, but pop would be much cleaner. I don't want to get them from a company which may go out of business or scrap them in 10 years. They won't be used heavily - just a few e-mails a day; a few mb space for attachments would be good.

Very grateful for any advice.

Email space is not a big brainier any more.

You want you own control?

Get yourself a Domain, and a Hosting space.

Almost all of them come with pop3 and webmail combo.

You can have email for your parent yourself and even your friends and relative.

Many Hosting provider give humble hosting services if you buy the domain from them, so the cost might be few $$$ and you have a Hosting space to boot.

You do not like it, it is your domain, take it elsewhere, and your email address still stays the same for 100years.

Example: http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/DomainRegistration;jsessionid=033C8E2194C24A8E0B91EBF07823E614.TC61a?__frame=_top

Yahoo is a good choice. Even though I have an email account with my ISP, I keep the Yahoo account for when I order online. I don't want junk flyers coming into my regular email account. Also, I seldom get junk email with Yahoo, but when I had hotmail pRon mail was standard.

Thanks all. I think I may try buying a domain - seems simpler and cheaper than I thought. I suppose if I want SMTP accounts I can use mine and fake it to look like theirs. (Sorry if this displays a limited understanding of email.) Our surname's domains have been taken - someone had grabbed .com, .org and .net. I'm sure he didn't need all of them, so I may give him an e-mail.

You want something stable and that will be around for a while; as well as afforable and has support. I would recommend Pair.com.

Pair networks have been stable and offer good services for the price. You can get a basic package for 25 bucks setup and 10 bucks a month.

Look into it http://www.pair.com click on hosting options.

just remember, before trying to set up your own domain for email, that spam is a huge problem. So if your hosting company doesn't supply an spam prevention, then your email will be getting slammed.

just remeber that.

ya thats because you guys got a domain, that is beign hosted on someone else's machines?

i thought you were all talkign about getting a domain, setting up your own pop machine. that would give you a ton of spam. obviously these places that host yoru domain have spam prevention.

Of course Hotmail downloads to outlook express, and it is free!

I have an XXXX@email.com account which is full pop and can also be accessed from the web while traveling. $19.95 per year. No great bargain (or expense for that matter) and they have great spam filtering. Spam pissed off my 80+ year old mom so much she dropped email totally (she had an msn account). can find email.com at www.mail.com

This doesn't make any sense.

True spam is a big problem.

But just because you get an email through domain does not mean it will automatically get spammed if they do not have spam prevention.

For anyone to get spam that domain would have to be known, not to mention the spammer would also have to have the full email address.

You go out and get any domain that has never been previously used and if you never give out that domain name or any email addresses associated with it and you will not get any spam. Exception is common name domains, but heck those are all taken now.

The only other way for it to get spam would be if the register you went through to get that domain sold the information, and even then they still don't have the email addresses related to that domain.

I host 4 domains (for email only) through my own personal email server. I alone have over 200 email accounts on my own personal email server and I might get one spam email every 3 months.

Now you might ask wtf do I have 200 email accounts. Well for every place I register they get a unique email from me. For example If I register at ESPN then when they request an email I give them ESPN@mydomain.com. So I have my own personal email for friends as MyName@mydomain.com then places I register or buy something from get emails like.. Buy.com@mydomain.com, NewEgg@mydomain.com etc.

So if I ever do get spam sent to my NewEgg@mydomain.com then I will know who is responsible for giving out that email address. Not that NewEgg does give them out, its just an example.

so many things wrong with what you said.

first off, every domain name can be looked up, so there is a list. i think it is just freak coincidence you dont get much spam. how logn have these been running?

and just because you get spam sent to your newegg@domain account doesnt mean they gave it out. thats bad reasoning.

some spammers take common account names (help, webmaster, info, humor, news) and try sending to those accounts for every domain.

the odds of yoru domain flying under the radar for too long is slim.

wiht all that said, why do you bother with all these emaill addresses and/or aliases. why not just use 1 at a time. be even easier on your end.
